More from the Drive

This valley will apparently not exist next year, as a dam project further south will cause it to flood.
Many villages are being relocated for the project.

We saw this fire in full force.  If you look closely at the bottom left you can see one of two people that were overseeing it.  Slash-and-burn rice farming is common up on the mountains, where hill rice is grown that doesn't need to be in paddies with water.  I'm told the practice is okay if the land has 8 yrs. before the next burn/plant cycle, but now it is being discouraged b/c they usually return in 4-5 years to the same place.

A large burnt hill; there are lots of banana trees fallen down in this one.  Logging happens a lot up here too, but off the road where you can't see it.  We just saw lots of logging trucks that used to be war trucks.

The views were gorgeous.  Here's one of my favorites.
